Abstract
T h i s h i g h l y r e s p e c t r e s e a r c h c o n c e r n e by t h e p h y s i o l o - g i c a l a n d b i o c h e m i c a l s t u d i e s o f c e s t o d e s C o t u g n i a -Spl a n d K i l l i g r e w i a %, t h e i n t e s t i n a l p a r a s i t e s o f t h e w i l d b i r d S t r e p t o p e l i a s e n g a l e n s i s a e g y p t i a c a a n d C o t u g n i a Sp2 a n d K i l l i g r e w i a Sp2, t h e i n t e s t i n a l p a r a s i t e s o f S t r e p t o p e l i a t u r t u r i s a b e l l i n a . The p a r a s i t e s o f g e n u s C o t u g n i a i n h a b i t the.anterior p a r t o f i n t e s t i n e a n d t h e p a r a s i t e s o f g e n u s K i l l i g r e w i a i n h a b i t t h e p o s t e r i o r h a l f . The p a r a s i t e s were i d e n t i f i e d t o t h e g e n e r i c l e v e l . I- B i o c h e m i c a l C o m p o n e n t s : 0 The c h e m i c a l c o m p o n e n t s w e r e m e a s u r e d i n b o t h bf e n t i r e worm t i s s u e a n d i n t h e t h r e e d i f f e r e n t a n a t o m i c a l r e g i o n s ( i m m a t u r e , m a t u r e a n d g r a v i d proglottides). I n t h e f i r s t c a s e a l l t h e worm t i s s u e was u s e d a n d i n t h e s e c o n d c a s e , t h e worms was d i v i d e d i n t o t h r e e m a j o r a n a t o m i c a l d i v i s i o n s . The s e p a r a t i o n o f b i o c h e m i c a l c o m p o n e n t s was c a r r i e d o u t on b a s i s o f p r o c e d u r e s o f Pappas,(1969). G l y c o g e n a n d p r o t e i n e x p r e s s e d a s mg/g wet w e i g h t t i s s u e a n d nucleic a c i d s a s pg/100 mg w e t w e i g h t t i s s u e i n e n t i r e worms t i s s u e a n d i t s r e g i o n a l d i s t r i b u t i o n i m m a t u r e , m a t u r e a n d g r a v i d proglotti d e s . B- .R.e.g. .i o. n. .a.l. .D.i.s. t.r. i.b. .u.t.i o n : I - The p a r a s i t e s o f genus C o t u g n i a : * Immature p r o g l o t t i d e s , t h e mean c o n c e n t r a t i o n o f g l y c o g e n i n C o t u g n i a Spl and C o t u g n i a Sp2 was 42.85 a 0.83 and 2 0 . 1 9 a 1 . 1 6 ; p r o t e i n was 58.64 t 2.4 and 7 6 . 0 1 a 5.92; RNA was 285.3 t 4.7 and 260.6 t 19.0; DNA was 200.6 t 20.4 and 301.6 + 11.7; RNA/DNA ratio was 1.44 + 0.15 and 0.86 + 0 . 0 5 ; RNA/protein ratio was 49.30 + 1.72 and 33.71 t 2.42 and protein/DNA ratio was 29.37 ? 3.05 and 25.63 t 2.13 , respectively. - * Mature proglottides, the mean concentration of glycogen in Cotugnia Spl and Cotugnia Sp2 was 34.97 t 2.53 and 44.59 + 1.80; protein was 75.58 t 3.35 and 97.81 t 4.14 ; RNA was 178.1 + 12.3 and 207.9 t 16.0; DNA was 301.6 t 11.7 and 192.1 + 24.4; RNA/DNA ratio was 1.43 t 0.11 and 1.10 t 0.12, RNA/protein ratio was 23.50 t 2.52 and 21.34 t 2.38; and protein/DNA ratio was 61.03 t 3.48 and 25.63 + 2.13 , respectively. * Gravid proglottides, the mean concentration of glycogen in Cotugnia Spl and Cotugnia Sp2 was 23.23 +_ 3.41 and 17.97 + 0.65; protein was 105.99 t 3.87 and 145.28 t 4 . 8 6 ; RNA was 153.4 + 2.4 and 246.7 + 13.3; DNA was 132.6 t 4.0 and 149.0 t 16.1; RNA/DNA ratio was 1.14 t 0.05 and 1.68 t 0.24; RNA/protein ratio was 14.33 + 0.60 and 16.99 t 1.27 and protein/DNA ratio was 79.96 t 3.18 and 98.70 t 11.41, respectively.
