Abstract

e COVID-19 pandemic posed a risk to people’s health in
general including mental health. People used social media
platforms more often than usual as a result of the coronavirus
disease’s fast spread and quarantine restrictions. People’s mental
health is impacted by the incorrect and excessive use of social
media, which raises levels of desperation and anxiety. This
study aimed to measure the association between the presence of
anxiety and depression in Ain Shams University staff and
social media use during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Data were collected through a 6-month cross-sectional
analytical study among 405 staff members at Ain Shams
University from 1 September 2021 to 31 March 2022.
According to the study findings, there were 114 total
employees, and (56.2%) of them were between the ages of 31
and 50. Male and female numbers were roughly equal, with
males making up (50.1%) and females (49.9%), respectively.
The majority of the participants (77.0%) had a university
degree, more than two-thirds (68.9%) were married, more than
one-third (35.6%) had a chronic illness. More than onethird (38.1%) of the participants already suffered from COVID19 disease and more than three-quarters (77.5%) of the
participants knew someone who had been diagnosed with
COVID-19.
