Abstract

C
hronic spontaneous urticaria is a chronic disease that affects patients’ quality of life and has a significant socio-economic burden due to its heterogeneous pathophysiology and increasing refractoriness to traditional treatments.
Leaky gut or increased intestinal permeability has been claimed to have a role in the pathology of many diseases including allergic ones such as bronchial asthma and atopic dermatitis, and autoimmune ones such as celiac disease and rheumatoid arthritis. A promising marker for disrupted gut barrier and increased permeability is zonulin. Zonulin is a pre-haptoglobin that regulates the gut barrier by increasing gut permeability through loosening the tight junctions between the intestinal epithelial cells.
Our study aimed to elucidate the relationship between serum zonulin level and chronic spontaneous urticaria and its possible relationship with its activity. We measured serum zonulin level in 97 CSU patients and 89 apparently healthy, age and sex matched controls. All data were collected, tabulated and statistically analyzed revealing multiple relationships.
We concluded that serum zonulin level is lower in CSU patients than in controls. Serum zonulin level only positively correlated to patients’ CRP level.
