Abstract

Background: Pressure ulcers are tissue destruction and necrosis due to cessation of circulation in the skin and subcutaneous tissues. Critically ill patients are among the most vulnerable groups were that exposed to it because of limited physical activity. Aim: Evaluate the effect of nurses’ compliance with evidence based guidelines on pressure ulcers prevention for critical patients. Design: A Quesi experimental research design (pre- and post-test). Sample: A purposive sample of (55) nurses who were on duty and agreed to participate in the study. Setting: The research took place in four intensive care units specifically the Cardiothoracic, Neurological, Urology and Trauma, all of which were associated with Minia University Hospital. Tools: Two tools were used for statistical collection. First tool: Structured Questionnaire Sheet includes two parts: 1st Part: Nurses’ structured interview sheet, 2nd Part: Knowledge Assessment Questionnaire Sheet. Second tool: Pressure Ulcer Guidelines Checklist for Practice covered the following items: (Maintenance of skin integrity, Skin care and prevention of urinary incontinence). Results: shows that there was a statistically significant deference in nurses’ knowledge and practice between them at the pre-test (before guidelines) which lead to low compliance and at the post-test and follow-up (after the guidelines) improvement in the compliance presented by P value (0.000). Conclusion: nurses’ knowledge and practice improved after receiving guidelines about the evidence based guidelines and their compliance was improved at the post-test and follow-up. Recommendation: continuous education and training sessions for all nurses working at different intensive care units about pressure ulcer preventive guidelines are necessary to improve their knowledge and compliance.
