Abstract

Background: Dysphagia is one of the major post-stroke complications. Swallowing exercise and range motion is one of the non-pharmacological methods, can improve the swallowing function and minimize swallowing problems that may develop from stroke. Aim: the study aimed to assess the effect of range of motion and swallowing exercises on the level of dysphagia among patients with stroke. Design: Quasi experimental design one group pre and posttest. Setting: This study was conducted at the neurological inpatient stroke care units which were affiliated to Ain Shams University Hospital. It was consisted of 11 beds, located on the hospital’s 2nd floor. Subject: Purposive sample of 36 patients from the previously mentioned department were included in the study. Data collection tools: Four tools were used, I. Patients’ interview questionnaire which composed of demographic characteristics, patients’ medical data, II. Gugging Swallowing Screening (GUSS) scale for pre & posttest implementation, III. Check list for range of motion for neck, jaw and tongue stretches, IV. Check list for swallowing exercise as effortful swallow and Modified Shaker exercises. Results: The results revealed that there were highly statistically significant differences between total level of gugging swallowing of the studied patients pretest & posttest. Conclusion: the present study concluded that: significant positive effect post range of motion and swallowing exercise implementation for stroke patients with dysphagia. Moreover, there is statistical significant improvement among the studied patients in all items of gugging swallowing screen (GUSS) scale. Recommendation: Continue update educational program about swallowing problems and swallowing exercise that should be designed for patients with stroke to improve their knowledge and prevention of potential complication.
