Abstract

The study analyzes idealized cognitive models of emotions of anger, fear, and pain in the action comic book Batman. This study analyzes comics displaying emotions like anger, fear, and pain using Lakoff and Johnson’s (2003) Conceptual Metaphor Theory (CMT) and Idealized Cognitive Models (ICM), developed by Kövecses (20003, 2008, 2010, 2012) and Forceville (2005, 2006, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2016, 2018). It examines pictorial signs and runes in comics and their impact on depicted emotions. The study aims to explore the use of visual and written metaphors in comics and their complementing role. The qualitative approach focuses on the interpretation of pictorial runes in action comics. The data selected for this research is from the action comic book Batman, as it provides abundant depictions of the emotion of anger and provides insights into pain and fear. The Dark Knight and the Legends of the Dark Knight are chosen for the research. The results show that the container metaphor is most commonly used to express anger. The second emotion fear is also represented through the container metaphor. While the most commonly used metaphor for the emotion of pain is that of pain as a physical force. Pictorial runes like speed lines and impact stars as well as movement lines and splashes of blood are used as a tool to depict these emotions. When it comes to facial expressions, the V-shaped brows and the wide-open mouth indicate scream either from pain or shouting.
