Abstract

This study investigates the linguistic tools utilized in the Egyptian TV series Halawet El Donia and the American TV series Chasing Life to reveal the discourse of hope (DOH). The rationale for selecting TV series to analyze is because TV series are multimodal texts encompassing both verbal and visual modes for influential impacts. The objectives of the study are to investigate how the DOH is manifested within such series, and to explore how mental images are created in the viewers’ minds to shift their mindsets from limiting beliefs concerning adversities. In order to fulfill such objectives, an analytical linguistic framework comprising both verbal and visual analysis is selected. The analysis of the selected data employs:1) Lakoff and Johnson’s (2003) Conceptual Metaphor Theory (CMT), 2) Kress and van Leeuwen’s (2006) Visual Grammar (VG), 3) Appraisal selected parameters, i.e. Attitude and Graduation, of Martin and White (2005) and Economou (2009), and 4) Feng and O’ Halloran’s visual metaphor (2013). This study addresses the following questions: 1) How is the CMT utilized in creating the DOH via generating multiple conceptual metaphors enhancing such discourse?; 2) how are the other linguistic tools including VG, appraisal model and visual metaphor deployed to expose the DOH?; 3) what are the similarities and differences between the two cultures in terms of the deployed linguistic tools to unveil the DOH in their TV series?. The results show that both verbal and visual modes are instrumental in empowering viewers via providing them with hope which, in turns, changes their way of thinking. It is recommended to adopt the cancer related DOH model, introduced by the researcher, to uncover the DOH manifested in movies or TV series discussing other hurtful topics.
