Abstract

The African American society suffers physically and psychologically from various aspects of violence in the white dominated society. Adrien Kennedy, Suzan Lori Parks, and Toni Morrison are among the most prominent African American playwrights who call for African American identity and struggle against violence. The selected plays The Owl Answers by Adrienne Kennedy, In the Blood by Suzan Lori Parks and Dreaming Emmett by Toni Morrison reveal the different forms of violence that the African American face especially women and children and how they suffer psychologically. This study tackles the different aspects of violence to which African Americans have been exposed drawing on insights from the theory of psychology of violence.
