Abstract

Objective: The aim of the present study is to show effect of increased body mass index on maternal, fetal and neonatal outcome. Material and methods: In this study three hundred (300) pregnant women are included in the study , They are divided into 2 groups: 150 pregnant women with normal weight and 150 pregnant women who are overweight and obese The influence of obesity was compared between the 2 groups regarding the incidence of gestational hypertension, gestational diabetes mellitus , IUGR, macrosomia, cesarean delivery, Apgar score at 1, 5minutes and Neonatal admission to ICU. Patients included in this study were selected with the following criteria; primigravias with age ranged from 20-40 years with singleton viable cephalic pregnancy with gestational age from 37 weeks to 40 weeks with known weights before 8 weeks of gestation. They were subjected to verbal consent, full history taking, clinical examination, laboratory investigations , ultrasound assessment and neonatal assessment after termination of pregnancy Results : Our study found increased risk of several complications in obese women; like gestational hypertension, gestational diabetes &cesarean sections rates. Conclusion :Limiting weight gain in pregnancy to IOM guidelines and tight control of hypertension and blood sugar level in women with gestational hypertension & GDM may improve maternal and neonatal outcomes. Therefore, prevention rather than treatment may offer the best hope
