Abstract

Background: Patients in intensive care units frequently get infections. Adhering to infection control measures is the only method to safeguard healthcare personnel, patients, and the public against outbreaks acquired in hospitals. Aim: Explore the factors affecting the application of infection control measures among nurses in the intensive care units. Subjects and Method: Design: A descriptive research design was utilized. Setting: In universal insurance hospitals at the port-said city. Subjects: A convenience sample of all available nurses (174) with at least one year of experience in intensive care units. Tools: includes the Nurses’ Knowledge Questionnaire, the Nurses’ Observational Checklist, and the Standardized Observation Checklist. Results: In this study, 89.1% of nurses had a satisfactory level of knowledge, 80.5% of nurses had a satisfactory level of practice regarding infection control measures. There was a statistically significant relationship between level of nurse’s practice and their age, sex, and knowledge about infection control measures. Conclusion: factors affecting the application of infection control measures in intensive care units cover nurses’ age, sex, knowledge, presence of policy, procedures, layout, environment design, adequate equipment, and supplies. Recommendation: Factors contributing to the application of infection control measures should be considered when Planing for continuous education regarding infection control measures and updating knowledge and practice should be done continuously.
