Abstract

Type 1 diabetes is the most common endocrine illness, it is one of the most chronic conditions which is common in children. Adequate diabetes care in the school is essential to student’s safety, long-term well-being, and higher academic performance. Aim: This study aims to develop guidelines for school nurses about supportive care for diabetic children in preparatory schools in the port-said governorate. Subject & Methods: A descriptive research design was utilized for this study, the study was conducted at preparatory schools in the port-said city on school nurses (N=40) and all diabetic children (N =80) in these preparatory schools. Four tools were used to collect research data, Tool (1), a structured interview sheet for the school nurse. Tool (2), socio-demographic of diabetic children. Tool (3),comprised perception sheet of diabetic children at school. Tool (4)diabetes self-management sheet for a diabetic child. Results: The study revealed that (45.0%) of school nurses didn’t know the causes, complications of type 1 diabetes. None of the school nurses had individual care plan and diet plan for each diabetic children, (45%) of diabetic children were often embarrassed by low blood sugar situations. Conclusions: It can be concluded that school nurse preparations for diabetic children are higher in private schools than experimental and governmental schools. Diabetic children who have diabetes for more than five years are more self-managed. Recommendation: Implementation of diabetes education programs periodically to school nurses, provision of blood glucose analyzer device in every school to ensure diabetic children safety.
