Abstract

This study was performed to induce cold tolerability in squash plants cv. Eskandarani by using some natural treatments, i.e., seed cold hardening, salicylic acid, calcium, zinc and natural extracts of garlic cloves and licorice root for improving their growth and productivity under open field at low temperature during winter months. So two pot experiments were done out-doors at the Experimental Farm of El-Serw Agricultural Research Station, Damietta Governorate, Ministry of Agriculture, Egypt during two successive winter seasons of 2016 and 2017. It could be concluded that application of the assigned treatments as seed soaking and foliar spray treatments led to vigorous growth of squash seedlings and altered the gender of the formed flowers to be in favour of female ones . Besides, the applied treatments also caused earliness of fruits production and increased their capacity under low temperature. That is reflected upon the ultimate fruits yield to reach highest values compared with the control as well as improved fruit quality. All of these could be attributed to the increment of photosynthesis efficiency and, in turn, the sufficient assimilates supply. Hence, higher fruit yield with good quality to be achieved. Therefore, all of these advantages make the applied treatments to be recommended as effective and safe agricultural practice in cultivation of such summer squash cultivar outdoors even during the winter season to avoid all cautions about inserting the green- houses in the agricultural system.
