Abstract The disposal concept aims to use a combination of natural and engineered barriers to achie the necessary degree of long-term isolation and containment of the radioactive wastes, order to assess the performance of a repository to specified safety targets, it is necessary consider possible routes in which radionuclides from wastes in the repository might return the accessible environment.- One of the main routes that need to be considered is unsaturated zone. The unsaturated zone represents a mathematical challenge for modelers due to dependency of the hydraulic conductivity and its associated gradients on the state saturation of the soil and the spatial variability in the input parameters through the field. I aim of this study is to simulate the groundwater flow and contaminant transport through unsaturated zone and perform sensitivity analysis to identify some relationship between output and the input parameters. In this context the following investigation will be can out: 1) Study the water infiltration through homogenous and non-homogenous unsaturated profiles this will be achieved by: a) provide a conceptualized model to represent each site; b) simulate the water flow in each site, and d) perform sensitivity analysis for selected input parameters to asses the relc importance of these flow parameters. 2) Study the coupled system of groundwater flow and contaminant transport thr( unsaturated zone this will be performed by: a) develop a numerical model that represents the mathematical model of problem, b) design a computer program to solve the developed numerical model, c) provide a simplified model for Inshas disposal site, d) study the effect of different initial and boundary conditions on the contam transport, |
