Abstract

The author put forward in this work a new design approach for stiffened plate panel aiming to reduce its weight and cost. The idea is to stiffen the flat plate by rectangular box corrugated panel instead of traditional rolled or fabricated sections. The results show that the new design for flat stiffened plate has much smaller weight and total cost. This flat stiffened panel could be very easily fabricated in any shipyard and does not need special machines or tools. The author developed a computer program which can offer the designer the best design of the flat stiffened panel with the least weight and total cost, using any type of stiffeners. Therefore a panel stiffened by the suggested box- corrugation is the one with minimum weight and cost, if compared with those stiffened by conventional rolled or built up sections. •
The suggested approach is based on replacing the conventional flat plate panel stiffened by similar equidistant rectangular box corrugated stiffeners welded to the one side only, leaving the other sides free.
In the following work, the author put forward a new design approach aiming towards least total cost. A computer program is developed to handle the strength analysis and produce the corrugated plate panel dimensions. Then, a cost analysis is carried out by the same program to calculate the total cost of that stiffened plate. Moreover, the program can work in a cyclic procedure, to change the number of corrugations used and the weight and cost are then calculated, to give the designer a choice to pick-up the most economical design that satisfies his requirements while having minimum weight and /or minimum total cost.
