Abstract

First of alL zo have vide-bandwidth communications, the switching technologies must be improved. Electronics technology no longer will be adequate. Therefore, a dramatic solution to the problem is needed Thus the optical-switchin2 technolog and the development of optical logic gates are required
As a trend of developin2 optical logic gates to be used in bulldinQ all-optical computers. this thesis focuses on the advances of all-optical computer because of its great importance and its several advantages over conventional computer. The thesis concentrates specifically on nonlinear optics based on the third order nonlinear susceptibility. This effect appears clearly in some materials called nonlinear optical materials such as optical fibers, organic polymers and semiconductors and the most famous sconduztor device in that field is the semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) These elemen all cc tifbe in coiistructing all-optical logic gates, adders.. counters. reisters, flip-flops and all—optical memory. This thesis investigates a new class of all-optical logic circuits by a semiconductor optical amplifier simulator (SOASIM). These optical circuits are based on the optical properties of the SOA as all-optical NOT gate, all-optical buffer, falling/rising clock edges and all- optical unit step fimctioa. Such circuits would be also used to construct the promising alloptical computer
We also tried to veri1Ey the simulation results of all-optical flip-flops based on the coupled laser diode done by Martin T 1-fill and optical memory based on tunable lasers done by E AJ M Bente et al. using Matlab and Mathcad packages.
