Abstract

Since the late 1980s and early 1990s the technical literature of the activated ge process has begun to reflect a change of emphasis from the design to the ional control of existing plants. As a result rapid advances have been in control systems e.g. real-time control of DO concentration. However, automatically control activated sludge plants a commitment of time and budget required for maintaining the instrumentation and control systems. Also expertise is indispensable to effectively integrate and continuously use systems. Under some circumstances this may prove to be economically sible especially as the necessary instrumentation is still not fully reliable, ions such as the proposed system -ASExpert- provide an alternative.
operators are vital to successfully monitor activated sludge plants and ; will increase their power to do so.
>sing CLIPS as the ES shell to implement ASExpert had many benefits. CLIPS’s rule-based paradigm and forward chaining mechanisms best suit a driven application like ASExpert. Second the ability to use CLIPS as a DLL its integration to a Visual C++ 5.0 interface. Thus it was possible to a customized Graphical User Interface (GUI) for ASExpert. This type of promotes user acceptance and enhances the accuracy and validity of user . Through ASExpert’s user-friendly interface an ordinary user with minimum • skills can easily interact with both the ES and database tools.
CLIPS supports knowledge base partitioning which facilitated the tion of the knowledge base in the form of separate files. This modular leads to better understanding, maintenance, validation and ease of station and also speeds execution as pointed out earlier, knowledge base building should be regarded as an on-going process that as long as the system is in use. Thus to add more flexibility to ASExpert jvided with a simple rule editor that facilitates adding new rules to the ge base files when needed. This rule editor represents some form of a acquisition facility that can be used by the user directly instead of knowledge engineer explicitly code the knowledge.
’s database tool is made up of 3 database sub-systems that integrate : sound and reliable records of the plant’s data, graphical representations
1 as required.
ability to access external databases is considered a necessity in the of successful real-world ESs implementations. It is usually reported in as a bridging capability (as it considered in its importance as a bridge
2 distant p/acesj. Thus the ES tool of ASExpert is provided with this p. The ES can access the system’s database records and retrieve values of fields and arrive at conclusions depending on these values. Such an is very useful and leads to a form of an intelligent database that : needs of modern plants.
ESs, ASExpert has a very strong potential to be used for training ASExpert can be used to train new operators how to handle real case
