Abstract
Environmental pollution is a major problem prevailing worldwide. Various sources contribute to this problem; mainly Motor-vehicle emissions and industrial activities. Vehicular traffic gives rise to dust, carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons, oxides of nitrogen and sulphur and paniculate matter including lead. These may adversely affect health of people in direct contact specially policemen, drivers, pedestrians and cyclists. The harmful effect of Motor-vehicle emissions could also extend to the plants cultivated in the streets. .\’erium oleander is one of these plants, .\~erinm oleander L. Family Apocynaceae is an ornamental plant cultivated in Egypt and in this study it is going to be used as an indicator of traffic pollution since it is cultivated in the main streets of Alexandria.
The present study aims at investigating the contamination of \~eruim oleander by some heavy metals including nickel (Ni). Cadmium (Cd). lead (Pb) and Zinc (Zn). and the impact of these contaminants on the active chemical constituents of.\’ernim oleander (total : cardenolidal content >.
Zn. Pb. Cd and Ni concentrations were determined in the soil and in.\enum \oieander leaves collected from 16 sites of the studied area during four seasons.
