Abstract This study was conducted to evaluate the efficacy of the 70 : 30 poly (D,L) lactide bioresorbable miniplate and screw system for osteosynthesis of maxillofacial fractures. The poly (D,L) lactide miniplate and screw system was evaluated on 15 patients with facia! injuries. Male patients experienced 80% of fractures, whereas females experienced only 20%. Their ages ranged between 13 - 38 years, with a mean age of 25.5 years. Evaluation of the site distribution of fractures revealed that 11 patients had mandibular fractures (73.3%), while 4 patients had zygomatic complex fractures (26.7%). Parasyrnphyseal fractures were the most common site for mandibular fractures (60%). Road traffic accidents (RTAs) were on the top of causes of trauma and were responsible for 40% of cases, while falls and direct trauma were the second cause comprising 33%, followed by physical violence in 27% of cases. Consolidation of the fractures was assessed on the basis of clinical and radiographic evaluation up to nine months post-operatively. Radiographs revealed proper alignment of fractures with no osteolytic changes detected around the material throughout the whole follow-up period. Analysis of the treatment outcome showed that all patients resumed their normal function with no cases of infection, foreign body reaction, wound dehiscence or sensory nerve dysfunction attributed to the material. Only one case of infection occurred, which was related to periapical infection of the teeth involved in the fracture line and resulted in non¬union. Infection was appropriately treated and re-operation was done a titanium miniolate. |
