Abstract

This thesis is an attempt to study ATM networks indicating different types : local , metropolitan and wide area network , with different network architectures ; OSI, TCP-IP and B-ISDN reference models.
This thesis also describes the different switching techniques , the advanced switching technology issues the difference between ATM and STM transfer modes , buffering strategies. Also there is a complete discussion on blocking and non-blocking ATM switches with examples like cross- bar and the banyan switch.
The thesis include the procedures of designing multi-cast input buffered ATM switch using VHDL language on FPGA Advpro5.0. we designed the switch in a modular way to avoid repeating the components, the multicast contention resolution algorithm is implemented in the switch to schedule the transmission of cells, enable the simultaneous delivery of ATM cells and ensure that no more than one cell is delivered to any given output port.
We simulated the network and the effect of changing congestion control algorithm on the throughput and the cell delay obtained from this network.
The results of the simulation helped in choosing the appropriate from the ATM network and the congestion control algorithm to have the best results in the throughput and delay to transfer more data with faster speed.
