Abstract

Today new attention is focusing on the health problems of women, specially among those of reproductive age, National and international research teams now lend considerable attention to the health of pregnant women, with emphasis on avoiding factors toot may adversely i~luence the health of mother and her feotus. Attention has been directed towards the estimated half million annual maternal deaths around the world. Complications of abortion account for 4 to 70 percent of ~ternal deaths in developing country hospitals and ~nown number of additional deaths outside of hospitals. ~om 30 to 55 million abortions are estimated to take place annually throughout the world. ()8 ) High maternal mortality and pregnancy wastage (feotal lossess) rates indicate a serious health problems in developiDg countries that deserves attent ion in primary health care programs. Although data ­ are poor, the available figures suggest that the problem is massive. (19 ) study the trend of mortality and morbidity overtime will give us idea about the prospective ohanges in mortality of future and the living stander of community as well as the maternity health services~15) Mortality and morbidity statistios in general and cause of death statistics in particular has its importance in decision-making in the public health field and give us a comprehensive health information system. (16) When we compare the levels of maternal mortality for different regions of the world. This will show the need to improve reproductive health, and try to reduce mortality at future. (18) The aim of the study was to determine the trend of maternal mortality and pregnancy wastage among women previously admitted to Dar-Ismail hospital over a five-year period from 1981 to 1985. In order to achieve this aim. The required informations were oolleoted from the medical .records of the Dar-Ismail hospital in Alexandria, all the data were retrospective and collected by reviewing all the charts of the discharged females and expired cases (all the death oases related to pregnancy, delivery and ~~” ’:’1. h}’;;? puerperium) the total number of maternal deaths were 36 deaths. . Data about abortion-and stillbirths were collected and studied from the records which were 5107 and 419 cases respectively. Special designed sheet was used to facilitate copying the required information from the hospital chart s . The results can be summarized at the following: 1. Most of dead women were at the extremes of reproductive age, 55.56 of them were at and above the age of 35 years and about one quarter (19.45) women below the age of 24 years. 2. About 42 of dead women had 4 and more deliveries and more than one quarter (22.22) were nulliparous women. J. The first leading cause of maternal mortality was - . haemorrhage, which is responsible for half the dead oases, 33.33 were due to post-partum haemorrhage and 16.66 were due to antipartum haemorrhage.
