Abstract

Dental caries, and periodontru disease are two of the most widely occwring disease. Dental caries is a chroDic disease affecting I mainly the children and adolescence, while the early signs of periodontal disease are frequently evident by the second decade and advanced destruction is commonly observed after the age of 40 years. Treatment of dental caries and gingival or periodontal disease is time consuming and expensive, the cost of medical and dental services are constantly rising, so it is obvious that oral diseases can not controlled by treatment alone and could be achieved through an approach based on prevention. The present study aimed at determination of dentists’ perception regarding effectiveness of different dental caries preventive methods, determination of dentists’ perception regarding cost-effectiveness of some dental caries preventive methods and determination of dentists’ perception regarding the long-term effectiveness of some dental caries preventive methods . A cross sectional study was conducted among dentists in . Alexandria working in Ministry of health, Faculty of dentIstry, Health Insurance, Medical care Organization and in Private sector. The dentists were stratified according to their degree of qualification and their site of work. A random sample was selected from each strata using proportional allocation. The sample selected amounted to 218 dentists. Data was collected from dentists at their site of work using special foOll of questionnaire consisting of different dental caries and periodontal -,r­ disease preventive measures and the dentists were asked to indicate their opinion about these preventive measures by ranking them according to their effectiveness, cost-effectiveness and long-term effectiveness, beside other questions to measure the knowledge of dentists regarding the etiology of dental caries and other dental caries preventive measures by using multiple choice technique. Analysis of data was accomplished through a non parametric technique. The results of the present study revealed the following. Lack of oral hygiene considered the first dental caries risk factor by the majority of dentists in different classification. I) Opinion of dentists regarding the effectiveness of specific dental caries preventive measures showed that control frequency consumption sugars had the first rank among 40 of dentists graduated before (1972), 29.17 of dentists graduating at (1972), and years after, 32.26 of dentists working in faculty of dentistry, 31.41 of dentists working in different sites of worke other than faculty of dentistry and among 35 of (Other Postgraduate Group),
