Abstract

This work aimed to investigate the properties of Egyptian high slag cement to shed the light on its employment as cement for high performance concrete, durable concrete and low heat of hydration concrete. Through investigation all results are compared with ordinary Portland cement and high slag cement replacement by 10% of silica fume by weight (high slag -silica fume cement). The following concepts were realized from the study findings:
• Relative to chemical analysis imported ground granulated blast furnace slag
is composed mainly of calcium oxide (39.67%), silicon oxide (33.4%), alumin oxide (12.37%), and magnesium oxide (8.17%). It also contains a significant amount of ferric oxide (1.0%) and sulfur oxide (1.72%). Ground granulated blast furnace slag is also characterized by its high chemical modulus (1.80).
• Imported ground granulated blast furnace slag, has a slag activity index of
(96.6%) after 28 days. As it is classified as grade 100 according to classification of ASTM.
• Relative to ordinary Portland cement, high slag cement have a higher alumin
oxide (AL2O3) by two and half times, magnesium oxide (MgO) by one and
half times and a higher silicon oxide (SiCh) by one and two times. It also shows lower calcium oxide (CaO), ferric oxide (Fe203), and alkali express as (Na2O+K2O) by 22.0, 57.0, and 34.0 percent respectively.
• Relative to ordinary Portland cement, high slag cement has significant
benefit effect against the disruptive of alkali aggregate reaction especially with dolomite aggregate. Also, high slag-silica cement has superior significant benefit effect against the disruptive of alkali aggregate reaction especially with dolomite aggregate.
• High slag cement, ordinary Portland cement, and High slag- silica fume
cement have a specific surface area equal 4327, 3120 and 7467 crrr/gm
respectively. Therefor, high slag cement is finer than, ordinary Portland
cement by about 39%and high slag-silica cement is finer than high sag
cement by about 139%.
