Abstract

Acute respiratory infections in Egypt are now responsible for: 30 percent of all infant deaths.. About 80,000 cases of pneumonia and more than 9000 cases of severe pneumonia were reported from 21 governorates in 1993. ARI are the result of interaction between factors in the host, infective agent and the environment. Biological factors (e.g. malnutrition), environmental factors (e.g. indoor air pollution) or behavioural factors affect the incidence and severity of ARI, however, there is little information from developing countries that can be used to quantify the importance of these factors. The aim of this work was to study the risk factors influencing the occurrence and severity of acute lower respiratory tract infections in the first two years of age. This study was carried out in the three main children hospitals in Alexandria, namely Alexandria University Children Hospital, EI-Ramleh Children Hospital and EI-Anfoushy Children Hospital for a period of twelve months started at June 1993, through a case control approach. A systematic random sample (n = 331) was selected from children up to two years of age attending the outpatient department for ALRI. Controls (matched for age and sex) were selected from those children who presented to the outpatient department of the same three ,. hospita Is. A subsample from cases and controls was selected for indoor air pollution measurements. I The following techniques were used for collection of data: 1- Clinical examination and categorizing cases according to WH,O classification. 2- Structured interview for the mothers of both cases and controls to collect data about socioeconomic and environmental characteristics possibly related to ALRI, besides, KAP study regarding ARI was included. 3- Assessment of nutritional status of both cases and controls. III 4- Indoor air pollution measurements, through home visits for the subsample (n =, 115). Pollutants measured were T.S.P., 502 and CO. The Study Showed the Following Main Results: . 1- Males were 55.9 and females were 44.1. Mean age was 9.4l6 months.
