Abstract

Cryptosporidiosis is a zoonosis affecting human, comoanion animals and domestic live - stock. It was ;ransmitted by personal contact with in-fected animals DV feacal - oral route and through ingestion of drinking water and -food. The present work was per-formed to determine the presence of Cryptosporidium oocysts in faeces of and non-diarrhoeal -farm animals and their in a rural area in Alexandria. To determine the seasonality of cryptosporidioslS. To determi ne the possible role o-f -farm animals as lSourc:e of cryptosporidiosis to human contact. .” This study was carried out on 803 animal sample, [206 attendants and 109 -family members. The stool were examined macroscopically and mic:roscopicall y by direct saline smear, iodine smear and by the modi-fied Ziehl - Neelsen stain a-fter c:oncentration by the , sheather s sugar concentration floatation method. The results obtained revealed that: One hundred - -fourty -four ( 144 ) animals were positive ~r Cryptosporidium oocysts which represented 17.93 . Twenty cases ( 20 ) o-f attendants were positive -for Cryptosporidium oocysts which represented 9.7 . Fourteen cases ( 14 ) of family members were positive ~r Cryptosporidium oocysts which represented 12.84. It was realized that there was inverse relationship between the age and in-fection rate. The highest percentage of infection was among animals less than one month ( 32.12 ) . ,” It was not iced that the highest percentage of infect ion among attendants was in the age group of 12 - < 15 years old ( 40;’ ) , whi le there was no oocysts detected in the age of more than 45;’ years. As regards the -family members the highest percentage o-f in-fection was in the age group of less than 5 years 50;’ , while there was no oocysts detected in the age o-f > 25 years. The higher percentage o-f in-fection among the three groups of the studied samples was in the summer season~ this decreased in spr i ng -followed by autumn, whi le the least percentage o-f in-fection was in winter season. There was no sex predominance in cryptosporidiosis infection among the three groups. Consider i ng that Cryptosporidium infection is a zoonotic disease, also it is an occupational hazards~ which have been shown in our study results, there was a significant relat ionship between the high number of pos i t i ve animals and the. high positive attendants infection rate. It was observed that the highest percentage of infection among the three groups of the studied samples was in Abbis . Among the attendants it was ound that ( 42.727. ) were positive or parasitic inection , ( 22.737. ) o them had mixed parasitic in-fection and the most detectab 1 e parasite was Shistosoma mansoni, while among the family members ( 457. ) were positive for parasitic infec:tions , and the most detec:table parasite was Giardia lamblia .^leng
