Abstract The wheezing child is a common clinical paediatric CD problem- Approximately 20 per cent of children suffer froir one or more bouts of wheezing during their first 10 years (2) of life- Children under 2 years of age are especially prone to wheezing as bronchospasm, mucosal oedema and accumulation of excessive secretions have a relatively greater obstructive effect on their smaller airways- (3) Normal breathing is inaudible because the linear velocity of airflow in the tracheobronchial tree is too slow to produce a sound- Wheezing is defined as a continuous sound with a musical quality heard mainly during expiration* It is (5) frequently associated with expiratory effort* Porgacs (1967) , stated that wheezing is caused by fast jets of air through airways narrowed to the point of closure* The pitch of the wheeze is largely determined by the linear velocity of this jet of air and is independent of the calibre and length of the airway* Wheezing is frequently interpreted as a nonspecific |
