Abstract

The state of pollution in inshore water of the Mediterranean has reached a critical level. This is mainly due to the high quantities of domestic sewage discharged untreated or only insufficiently treated, into the sea through rivers, outlets and pipelines, and also due to the organic load of industrial effluents and almost the total absence of control over their toxic components and solid substances. The disposal of Alexandria sewage to land or to sea was and still a problem of the city, up till now the main disposal sites are to the sea. A major outfall at Kayet Bey and minors at different coastal sites are located from the Eastern Harbour in the west till EI-Maamoura at the east especially during winter. In summer most of the short outfalls directly disposing sewage wastes to the beaches; are locked except that at EI-Silsila. The present work tends to evaluate the chemical effects of sewage disposal from Alexandria city at Kayet Bey and Eastem Harbour areas on the quality of the surrounding sea water. These main sewage outfalls lead to the alteration of the physical, chemical and biological characteristics of the area effected by wastes. Evaluation was carried out by measurements of chemical and physical parameters in order to interpret any impainnent on the validity of this water to other uses. The investigated area was chosen to include two connected sites of sewage disposal, one is semi enclosed i.e., the Eastern Harbour (E.H) and the other is more or less open and has good exchange with the open sea i.e., the area sUlTOunding the main waste outfall of Alexandria at Kayet Bey. Twenty three stations were selected to cover the area of study. Monthly sampling was carried out in the period from October, 1986 till July, 1987. The results of observation of physical parameters and chemical measurements carried out could be considered as an evaluation of the type of reaction and self purification processes occur in the area as a result of waste disposal. These results can be summarized as follows:L V’15D8l ObsenatiODS Colour, transparency and spreading direction of the brownish to grayish colours are nonnal characters of the sea water in the area of disposal and could be used as a tracer for the direction of spreading of the effluents. Most of the year ( 8 months) the wastes spread to the east direction, the rest of the year ( - 4 months or less), the wastes spread to the west direction especially in the time of stonn surges. The turbidity of the water due to suspended matter can be con
