Abstract The present study was undertaken to analyze the discharge characteristics of the flexible sluice gates. In the theoretical study, dimensional analysis is applied to relate the different factors affecting the hydraulic phenomenon. Experiments were conducted in a smooth rectangular channel. Gates with different thicknesses were used. Different gate openings with variable flow parameters, i.e. discharge, and tail water depth, were used. The hydraulic analysis showed that the flexibility of the gate enhances its hydraulic characteristics. This is true for both free and submerged cases. The flexible gate has another advantage, that it reduces the cost of the gate, thus we can use flexible gates ofless inertia rather than the usual rigid ones. |
