Abstract

I In phases of socio-cultural transformations in a country the infant feeding and weaning practices are also usually changed. As the PDR Yemen is undergoing a transition from traditional to a modern society, this study was conducted to investigate the mothers practices in feeding and weaning their infants and to find the effect of some family characteristics on the pattern and duration of breast-feeding./ This study was carried out in rural and urban areas of both Sana’ a and Aden. The sample included 539 mothers with their infants under two years old, which were chosen from selected MCH centers from the availability of mothers that fulfil the criteria of selection. The mothers attending these centers for immunization of their infants were interviewed. An especially designed ques t i onna i re for data collection was constructed. Data included family chara,cter is tics, tradition regarding immediate feeding after delivery, breast-feeding pattern, breast-feeding at night and reasons given for why not to breast-feed, artificial feeding and care of bottle. Data on weaning pattern and supplemental feeding (age of starting introduction of such- food other than milk, method of weaning, the reasons of weaning and weaning procedures). Results obtained can be summarized as follows: I. Family characteristics The majori ty of infants were concentrated in the age group 3-5 months and 9-11 months (37.7 and 21.7, respectively) .
