Abstract Human proinsulin is a single chain polypeptide of 86 amino acid residues in which the N-terminus of the Achain is linked with the c-terminus of the B chain via the connecting segment somprising 35 amino acid residues. Astricing feature of the biosynthetic process is the relatively slow rate of conversion of proinsulin to insulin, which in part, reflects the time required for the transport of the newly synthesized proinsulin from the ribosomal site of biosynthesis on the rough endoplasmic reticulumic to the golgi region. |
