Abstract Group B streptococci, tax.onomy designated streptococcus aga/actiae (Strept agalactiae) because of its historical association with bovine mastitis. It was reported that GBS were often present in the post partum period with endometritis and that they were associated occasionally with mild fever and GBS were isolated from blood in cases of puerperal septicaemia. The principal reservoir for GBS in man, is the female genital tract. There is often confusion about the significance of bacterial isolates from mucosal surfaces such as the vagina. There is a big difference between colonization in normal women and the isolation of organisms in disease. Genital carriage of GBS was more common in teenagers than older patientJand also there were higher rates of carriage during the first three pregnancies with inceasing resistance to genital colonization with advancing age and repeated pregnancies. Several reports listed a high prevalence rate for the isolation of GBS from vaginal cultures during pregnancy and among parturients at delivery. Most attention has been - f?Ccused on the effect of maternal GBS colonization on neonatal infection. |
