Abstract Thyroid cancer is the most common endocrine malignancy and is more frequent among women than among men. The study aimed at studying the risk factors which may play a role in the development of thyroid cancer. Also, to study the survi val of thyroid cancer cases and the prognostic factors inf I uenc ing the surv i val 0 f cases in Alexandr ia. The material of this study was all thyroid cancer cases residing in Alexandria and registered by A.C.R. during the period January 1 st 1979-December 31 st 1988. The studied records were: the records of A.C.R, the medical records of the Radiotherapy department of Alexandria University Hospital, Health Insurance Hospital and Medical Research Institute Hospital, the pathological reports of patients as well as the vital statistics registry. Letters lIere sent to the patients asking them to attend the follow ubJ clinic of the Radiotherapy department of Alexandria University Hospital. Data were obtained from the records and completed by interviewing the patient himself, his relatives, via telephone calls or by letters sent by ,the relatives of the deceased cases. .1.0;:1 Follow up was done to all patients at the end of this I~eriod and the survival rates of these patients were computed ~5ing the actuar ial life table method. ,!he results of the study revealed that: 1- The incidence rate of thyroid cancer in Alexandria accounted for 1.67/100,000 midyear Alexandria population, the annual incidence rate had no significant trend. The incidence rate in females was higher than in males (2.27/100,000 versus 1.11/100,000), the female to male ratio was 1.93. 2- Thyr 0 id cancer represented 2.22 of all cancez:s registered during the study period. |
