Abstract

Head and neck defects or composite excision of oral and facial tissue together with bone of the jaws results in complex situation of disturbed function and esthetics. The development of microsurgical techniques made it possible to repair these complicated defects in one session.
Head and neck reconstruction with free flaps has become a well established technique as it showed superior results to those obtained with previous methods of reconstruction. The choice of donor sites for head and neck reconstruction has frequently been determined by the familiarity of the surgeon with particular technique. However, each patient presents a unique problem, and donor site selection should be determined by the specific bone and soft tissue requirements of the defects.
A clinical study was conducted where the application and efficiency of free flaps; either composite or myocutaneous flaps, such as; radial forearm, fibular, vertical rectus abdominis, latissimus dorsi free flaps to reconstruct various head and neck defects either immediately or delayed were studied. In the current study, free flaps were used for reconstruction of various head and neck reconstruction.
Morbidity of donor sitçs was evaluated for the different flaps, functional evaluation, functional rehabilitation and esthetic outcome also were evaluated, seven patients were constructed with radial forearm flap, six patients were constructed with free fibular flaps, four patients were constructed with vertical rectus abdominis flaps and three patients were constructed with free latissimus dorsi flaps.
