Abstract

Antioxidant defensive system involves a variety of compounds, both endogenous and exogenous in origin, that function interactively and synergistically to neutralize free radicals. These component include nutrient derived antioxidants like (vitamin C, vitamin E, carotenoids and others), antioxidant enzymes like (superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxidase and glutathione reductase) and metal binding proteins, such as ferritin, lactoferrin, transferrin, albumin and ceruloplasmin.
This study was carried out on 60 patients with different total cholesterol risk to find out if there is association between high cholesterol level as an oxidative stress and non enzymatic antioxidants ceruloplasmin and transferrin. The patients were classified according to total serum cholesterol level into three groups; group A (normo-cholesterolemic group) with total serum cholesterol level ranging from 150 to 200 mg/dl, group B (risky group) with total serum cholesterol level ranging from 200 to 250 mg/dl and group C (hypercholesterolemic group) with total serum cholesterol level over 250 mg/dl. Measurement of serum total cholesterol, triglycerides, HDLc, LI)Lc, serum transferrin, serum ceruloplasmin and serum malondialdehyde was carried out.
