Abstract
In the present study. the effect of silymarin on liver dysfunction induced experimentally in rats by 0—galactosamine and paracetarnol overdosage,and in mice by schistosoma mansoni infection was investigated. In addition the effect on patients suffering from acute viral hepatitis was studied.
I—The experimental study
A— In galactosamine study:
64 adult male albino rats were divided into 3 groups. Group 1 and 2, each consisted of 8 rats, while group 3 consisted of 48 rats and divided into 6 equal subgroups. Silymarin—traqacanth suspension was given orally in a dose of 100 mg/kg. 4 hours before, 6 hours after. and 4 hours before and 6 hours after a sing’e intraperitoneal injection of 300 mg/kg galactosamine. The corresponding control groups received tragacanth suspension orally(in equal volume to that used with silymarin), while normal control groups received saline intraperitoneally.
