Abstract

We evaluated a new method for determination of the left, ventricular ejection fraction. This method is simple, non-invasive, inexpensive, routinely used and reasonably accurate.
It is based on the concept of heart volume/mass described by Ostojic et al., 1984) (Ostojic et al., 1986) and by (Ostojic et al., 1989). This method combines ECG and chest X-ray indices to predict left ventricular function. from the points of both statistical and practical theories, the chest X-ray examination and ECG are ideal complementary tools to assess left ventricular systolic function. What might be missed by one may be detected by the other (Ostojic et al., 1989).
In this study, we applied this method on a variety of heart diseases affecting the left ventricle. We did not even exclude patients with left and right bundle branch block, non-specific ! intraventricular conduction delay, hemiblocks or left ventricular hypertrophy.
And this did not affect much the accuracy of the measurement.
This method used the sum of R-waves in precordial leads ¥3 through V(5 so that the formula developed could be easily and widely applied.
