Abstract Causes of mental retardation are numerous and include genetic and environmental factors. In at least 30-50% of cases physicians are unable to determine the etiology despite thorough evaluation. Recent studies have shown that cryptic unbalanced snbtelomeric rearrangements contribute to asignificant proportion of idiopathic mental retardation. Th present study was aimed at identifiction of the role of minor chromosoml abnormalities in the etiology of unexplained mental retardation. The current study was conducted on twenty two patients with unexplained mental reatardation or mental developmental delay,attending Genetics clinic, pediatric hospital,EL-Minoufiya University&Outpatient clinic,Ain Shams University Medical Genetics Center,from August 2004 to August 2006. They were 13 males and 9 females, their ages ranged between 2 1/2 years and 12 years 9mean age 6.25 +_1.340 |
