Abstract

The various concepts of handicap all emphasize handicap as something to be applied to functioning rather than people. The handicap individual is a person with certain degree of disability that renders him in need for extra-help in order to develop to his best capacity. Mental handicap or Mental retardation (MR) is a condition with enormous public health implications. Various dimensions of family issues as they are influenced by the presence of a mentally retarded individual in the family are explored. The essay demonstrates some idea concerning attitudes toward mental retardation in order to better understand the problem fully. The ICD-10 Classification of Mental and Behavioural Disorders defines Mental retardation as a condition of arrested or incomplete development of the mind, which especially characterized by impairment of skills manifested during the development period. AAMD defines mental retardation as, a significant subaverage general intellectual function, existing concurrently with deficits in ampative behavior and mainmast during the developmental period .Also aim of the work to identify the role of the family doctor, professional and parents in caring of mentally handicapped children. Demonstrates the current situation of disability in Egypt.
