Abstract

In this study we tested 1 25 volunteer blood donors who came to the Liver Institute blood bank to donate blood for their liver diseased relatives or friends.
Their blood groups were determined and their serum samples were tested for HBsAg, HIV, ALT level, AST level, and anti-HCV using Elisa and the Elisa positive cases were confirmed by RIBA.
Full history was taken: Age, sex, marital status, residence, occupation, history of blood transfusion, previous operations, previous blood donations, history of jaundice, family history of liver disease, dentist visits, and history of drug addiction. Height and weight were measured and the body mass was calculated.
We analyzed data on IBM compatible computer using Epi Info program.
- HCV was found in 43 donors (34.4%) out of 1 25 blood donors.
• Anti-HCV positive cases were tested by RIBA, 34 (79. 1 %) cases of them were RIBA reactive, 7 (16.3%) indeterminate, and 2 (4.6%) were non-reactive.
