Abstract

Fecal pollution hazerds have been increased during t he re cen t ye ara due to the use of marin a and fresh water outfalls for the disposal of san itary snd industrial wastes. Feca 1 coliforRlf3, and feca 1 streptococci are used to indicate hazardous fecal con taminat ion of water. Two methods are mainly used for detection of these orga nisms, the mul tip le tube ai lution met hod OI4:TD) and membrane filter technique (MP). The pre s en t 8 tudy was designed to compare between the m.u! t1ple tube dilution method and membrane filter techniqUB, in order to find whichon’e is more efficient fer the iso la tioD. and en umeration of feca 1 colif orms and fecal streptococci. This study was carried ou t on 124 wa ter samples (74 marine and 50 fresh water) collected from Alexandria beaches, Mahmoudia canal and Nile river stream. These samples were’ examined simult3neously wi.th MTD and MP methods and .was found that: (1) MF technique gave higher count of fecal coliforms” then MTD method. ’rhe re 1ativ e fece 1 coliforms recovery (MTD/MF) was between 0.01- 12 with an average Geometric mesn of 0.549. (2) Out of the 124 samples examined by MTD method 121 (97.’6) were positive for fecal coliforme with ar it bema ti c me an 0 f 15214. 11. FecE 1 c oliforms by MF technique were found in 123 (99.2) with arith ematic me an of 20610.89. The overall relati~e fecal c01ifo.rms recovery (mean MTD/mean MF) waS 0.738:1.
