Abstract

Male patients with chronic renal failure and those on regular dialysis treatment manifest a multitude of abnormalities in their sexual function, its incidence ranging between 38 — 80% according to different authors. Dialysis does not improve these abnormalities and even frequently some patients describe worsening in their sexual function after starting dialysis therapy. However, these abnormalities disappear in most patients after successful renal transplantation.
The mechanisms responsible for the pathogenesis of sexual dysfunction are not fully elucidated and several factors have been implicated. These factors include; the state of chronic illness, psychological factors, the state of zinc deficiency, autonomic neuropathy and drugs as well as hormonal abnormalities. The hormonal abnormalities include hyperparathyroidism and abnormal hypothalamic pituitary gonadal axis.
Several papers ruled out the role of depression, the state of chronic illness, zinc deficiency as well as deficient testosterone from the
