Abstract Amylin is a 37- amino acid peptide hormone that is co-secreted with insulin by the pancreatic beta-cells in response to a nutrient stimulus. Therefore, it was suggested that amylin may have significant physiological effects on carbohydrate metabolism. It was proved to have a hyperglycemic effect on experimental rats than did glucagon. Also it can produce a marked state of insulin resistance when infused in rats. In order to clarify the pathophysiology of aniylin in IDDM, patients, we measured the fasting plasma amylin level in twenty patients with IDDM (11 females, 9 males), aged between 25 - 42 years and compared them to age and sex matched age group twenty healthy control subjects. The study found that the fasting plasma amylin level is highly significantly decreased in patient group when compared to the control group range from (0.1-3.5 ng/ml) with mean (1.61 ± 1.2) and range from (2.1 - 8.9) ng/ml with mean (6.21 ± 2.01) respectively. Our study showed also that there is no significant difference between the plasma amylin levels in males and females in both groups. A negative, although non significant correlation was found between plasma amylin levels and the fasting blood glucose level. |
