Abstract

Since the conventional energy sources are nonrenewable,
these energies will, one day, be exhausted. Even
new sources of energy such as nuclear power plants,
which today account for only few percent of the energy
resources, use fuels which are available in limited quantities.
For all these reasons, the world needs a new
unlimited source of energy, which is the solar energy.
The solar energy is exp~nsi~e compared to the other sources
of energy •
For some applications such as military, the cost is
not that the critical factor. Other factors such as the
ability to manouvering, system protection, and the availability
of the source on request is the most important.

We have collected, analyzed, and organized, u~eful da~a
(insolation, temperature~ wind speed, humidity) ~or diffe-
rent locations in Egypt. The insolation has been measured
using solar cell in each location which are calibrated
against a standard solar cell at UNARC. The insolation
data’ collected for horizontal and latitude angle
orientation is compared with available ~ata • ~he data
obtained is considered an important reference for researchers
who are working in this area We study the mi1itary.applications and a photovo1taic
power system.is designed of 12 Kilowatt, 200 volt DC
serving a Radar for Air Defence Forces. The replacement
of the conventional diesel generator for this application
by the proposed photovoltaic generator is studied from
the tactical and economical point of view •
An extensinsive cost analy~is study of the design and
opera’t i on of photovo1 taic systems in Egypt has been carried
out •
