Abstract

Protein deficiency is an important nutritional probl~ effecting large population group in many parts of the world and many developing oountries. Protein deficiency is more prevalent when protein of Mimal origin are lacking in’ diet, suoh protein are more expensive and less available in different communities. Fish is considered an excellent source of animal protein, its nutritive value is equal to that of meat. Many workers in the field of human nutrition stressed that the oonsumption of sufficient quantities of fish can help in correcting the state of protein deficiency which is so widely prevalent today. , Lake Mariut is considered as one of the most important fish production resource in Alexandria, its fish production has become more important to Alexandria after the significant decline in marine fisheries, represents about 80 of the total fish consumed in Alexandria. However the lake has been subj ected to various changes that affected its fishery and reduced its fish production. The present study was done to study the lake fishery, and the different factors that influencing its fish produotion, ~so to evaluate its fish production as a protein source and its role in food consumption in Alexandria. To achieve such goal the present study required to evaluate the following points: 1 . Fish as a Protein Source: A sample of 20 fish of Tilapia (Bolti) from Lake Mariut, and three samples, each composed of 20 fish, from the Marine species Saurida (Makkarona)., Pagrus vulgaris (Mourgan) and Mullus barbatus (Barboni), were selected randoml.y, and analysed to determine its protein content. 2 - Patterns of animal protein consumption and the role of fish as a protein source-: The method used was the interview schedule for the housewives. The total s~1ple size amounted to 600 housewives that represented different income levels, and families of different size. The sample was chosen using the simple random method, and the collection of data was carried out through personal inter view where housevrives were visited at Alexandria University Hospital, Dar Esaeel Maternal Hospital, Maleka Nazly Children Hospital, Raml-Secondary School for girls and Ambrozo-Commeroial School for girls. 3 -Lake Mariut fish production a- Factors influencing the lake fish production: Data concerning Lake Mariut fish production during the period 1962-1975 were collected, classified into three period intervals and according to the lake water area and the lake water level. The average annual fish yield for each period intervals were obtained and compared. b - Est~ati<2!!..N )Jake M~iut fish :prodq.ctio..n: Two samples, eaoh composed of 100 fishing boats were seleoted randomly from two fish landing oenters. For eaoh ample the mean fish catch per boat per day was obtained. and by oompared/using the suitable test of significance. From the combined sample the general average of fish catch per boat per day in Lake Mariut was obtained, and fish production from the lake was estimated from the following formula: The ave~age fish oatch per boat per unit fishing trip X The total fishing trips per year. The data of the present study could be summarized as follows: 1- Fish as a protein source: The results illustrated that fish represented an important source of animal protein.
