Abstract

Intussusception is the most common cause of intestinal obstruction in children. It is due to invagination of one portion of the gut into another portion adjacent to it.
The cause of intussusception is usually idiopathic but theories suggest that, it may be related to change of feeding habits or seasonal incidence related to certain virus.
Intussusception may also occur secondary to polyps, submucous lipoma
or inverted Meckle’s diverticulum.
Intussusception is composed of three segments: entering layer, returning layer and outer sheath associated with apex and base. Types of intussusception are ileo-caecal, ileo-ileal, colo-colic, ileo-ileo-colic(ileo-ileal protruding through ileo caecal junction) or multiple.
This study included 33 patients (21 boys&12 girls) with clinical signs and symptoms suggestive of intussusception. Ultrasound examination (gray scale &color Doppler) was done for all patients.
Intussusception was diagnosed in all patients with the known US criteria, and all patients underwent a US-guided hydrostatic reduction attempt wholly within the US examination room.
A pressure of(90-110mm Hg) was maintained, with US guidance. The procedurewas considered to be successful when US showed the disappearance of the intussusceptum and the edematous terminal ileum with an abrupt transition into the normal proximal ileum. When the intussusception was not reduced, the procedure was repeated, with pressure increased to 130 mm Hg.
