Abstract

Threatened abortion is a common complication that occurs in almost 25% of clinically apparent pregnancies, it is a condition of pregnancy occurring before the 20th week of gestation that suggests potential miscarriage may take place (Goldstein, 1990 and schwarzler et al., 1999).Nearly all non-viable gestations eventually abort; spontaneous expulsion is frequently delayed for weeks after the onset of clinical symptom (Nyberg et al., 1986). This may lead to prolonged vaginal bleeding, infection and patient anxiety. Although none of this is life threatening, clinical management depends on whether or not the embryo is living, therefore the reliable identification of non-viable gestation is important to determine which patient merit from evacuation, potentially viable embryos on the other are observed expectantly (Achiron et al.,199The aim of this study is to determine whether the correlation of ultrasonography for assessment of the mean gestational sac diameter,crown-rump length, yolk sac diameter, fetal heart rate, color Doppler studies of uterine arteries RI, S/D&PI, corpus luteum RI, subtrophoblastic arteries RI&PI, are useful as prognostic values in the prediction ofpregnancy outcome in first trimester threatened abortion. We found that maternal age, gravidity, parity, yolk sac diameter and corpus luteum RI have no role in the prediction of outcome of threatened abortion. It was concluded that transvaginal color Doppler ultrasound may add new information on RI, S/D& PI of both uterine & subtrophoblastic arteries in addition to serial measurements of MSD, CRL, FHR and size of subchorionic hematoma if present to allow further evaluation of the threatened abortion outcome. So this study recommend follow up cases of threatened abortion by serial grey scale and color Doppler ultrasonography.
