Abstract

Overactive bladder dysfunction is an expression of defective neuromuscular control of the lower urinary tract. The causes and the way to classify this problem are currently under debate.Overactive bladder, which is characterised by the symptoms frequency, urgency and urge incontinence, is acommon and distressing condition that can affect any one at any age. Generally, however the prevalence of overactive bladder increases with patient age.Idiopathic overactive bladder (detrusor instability) is defined as overactivity in the absence a clinically detectable neurogenic disorder. Outflow obstructions, the tentative aetiologies of detrusor instability are congenital, behavioural psychosomatic, aging, pelvic floor/urethral disorder, myogenic, hypersensitivity and mixed. Detrusor instability (DI) is a urodynamic entity. The presence of detrusor dysfunction must be urodynamically demonstrated and the diagnosis cannot be simply based on clinical grounds. The International Continence Society (ICS)defines DI as a cystometric and clinical entity Selected study samples or study samples that include only individuals with urge incontinence may not be representative of the broad spectrum of persons with overactive bladder in the general population, many of whom do not have urge incontinence.
