Abstract

Stroke is the third most common cause of death and a major cause of hospital resource consumption, not only in acute-care hospitals but also in institutional long-term care. As the third leading cause of death and the most common disabling disease, stroke has an enormous emotional impact on both patients and their family member.
Depression is a common complication of stroke, leading to increased morbidity and mortality.
It imped the process of rehabilitation, and has been associated with poorer outcome and increased length of stay in hospital The aim of the present work is to determine pattern of post stroke depression (PSD) in patients with ischemic cerebrovascular strokes and correlate these finding with the site and size ofinfarction in C,T. in early and late stages The present study was conducted on 60 patients suffering from ischemic stroke and also suffring from post stroke depression selected from those attending to Minoufiya University Hospital in Neuropsychiatry Department.
The patients were divided in two groups:-
Group one (I): 30 patients with PSD in early phase (one month after stroke)of them there were 18 males and 12 females with age range from 39-70 years.
Group two (II): 30 patients with PSD in late phase (6 months after stroke)of them there were 18 males and 12 females, with age range from 40-70 years.
All patients in tow groups were subjected to the following:
1- History taking.
2- Physical examination.
3- Neuropsychiatry examination.
4- Radiological examination (CT Brain).
5- Cimical assessment for diagnsosis oi depression aocordms,to vesearch diagnostic criteria ofICD-10(W.H.O. 1992).
6- Barthel index
