Abstract
Thiopentone had a major role in clinical anaesthesia since its introduction in 1934. It is an agent which produces one of the most satisfactory forms of anaesthesia from the stand-points of the anaesthetist, the surgeon and the patient. Loss of consciousness occurs in one arm-brain circulation time after intravenous injection of an effective dose. There is a wide variation between patients in the dose required to induce anaesthesia.
This study comprised one hundred patients (47 males and 53 females) of different ages (8-68 years) and different body weights (22-98 kgs). They were clinicallyfree from cardiovascular, renal and hepatic diseases. The correlation between thiopentone requirements to abolish the eye lash reflex and age, sex, body weight, body surface area, haemoglobin level and plasma proteins level was studied.
The results obtained in this study were:
1. There was a positive highly statistically significant
relationship between thiopentone requirements in mg and
both body weight and body surface area.
2. There was a statistically significant relationship
with negative correlation (r =-0.361) between thiopentone requirements in mg/kg and age (P<O.OO1).
