Abstract

The wide variety of the antioxidants in foods contribute to disease pevention. The bulk of research has focused on three antioxidants which are .. essential nutrients or precursors of nutrients: vitamin E, vitamin C and the earotenoids. Each of these antioxidant nutrients have specific activities and mey often work synergistically to enhance the overall antioxidant capability of me body. The dietary antioxidants may be of significance in the prevention of aegenerative diseases and the maintenance of good health. The aim of this study was to assess the dietary habits and nutrient intake of the antioxidants among the diabetic patients; the antioxidant status in the sera of these patients, and the relation of previous parameters and the occurrence of CHD in these patients. This study was implemented in El Pharaanah diabetic center of Health Insurance in Alexandria. From the attendants of the clinic, males aged 40-60 rears, were selected-using the systematic random technique-to participate in ilie study. The total sample was 1000 diabetic male patients, and every tenth patient was subjected to the biochemical essay. Data was collected using the following tools, using a structured ~uestionnaire interviewing on: j, Sociodemographic: age, marital status, family size, educational level, occupation and monthly incomeicapita. . Smoking history: actual smoking (its durationi years and number of cigarettes smoked/day); the previous smoking in the actually non smokers (its durationiyears and the number of cigarettes smoked/day). Ferris index of smoking was calculated. . The Physical activities, its type and duration (hoursiweek). . Family History of chronic diseases (D.M., CHD and hypertension). History of drug intake: oral hypoglycemics, insulin, cortisone, antihypertensive drugs and calcium channel blockers. . History of the diabetic condition: age of onset, duration and type of treatment followed. . History of the present diabetic complications, especially presence and duration of CHD. 1. Clinical examination and measurement of the blood pressure. 1. Anthropometric measurement: weight, height, waist circumference, hip circumference, waistihip ratio c~ and body mass index calculation. 4. Laboratory tests: estimation of the total antioxidant status using the Randox Total antioxidant status test. 5. Dietary intake: dietary intake data were assessed for the following: food habits for fruits and vegetables intake; intake of antioxidant rich foods, antioxidant nutrient intake by analysis using F.C.T. (vitamin C, E, retinol, carotene and zinc). Findings of the study showed that: I The percentage of the diabetic patients increased with increased age, the mean age was 52.13:f:5.6l years.
