Abstract

This thesis concerns the investigation of problems resulting from unsteady flow in pipe systems. Unsteady flow conditions studied in the present work are created by various cases of valve closure and pump power failure in the different hydraulic systems. The unsteady flow hydraulic systems are operated with and without different protection devices (surge relief valve, air chamber, surge tank, etc).
A mathematical model is developed to study the transient flow problems occurring in hydraulic pipeline system that caused by the various operating conditions. Experiments are also performed on a water hammer piping system to verify the numerical model used to analyze the unsteady flow problems and check the numerical prediction with experimental results for pressures and wave celerity.
In the beginning the problems of unsteady flow in pipeline systems and its control are investigated. Then, the governing equations of the unsteady flow are derived. The equations employed in the derivation include (i) the continuity equation in one dimensional flow (the principle of conservation of mass), and (ii) Newton second law in one dimensional flow (the momentum conservation principle)
